CHAPTER 19

BARBARA AND CHUCK checked out the Salem Stronghold office shortly before midnight. Before leaving, Chuck had grumbled about our excursion to the house, calling Regan and me frivolous brats while we sorted through the stuff we’d brought back on the kitchen counter. We both ignored him as we showed each other items we’d forgotten about. The two knights did not bother to say goodbye when they left on their clandestine mission.

I opened a final box and found the last thing I’d snatched from the house: the framed photo of Regan from our fireplace mantle.

I squealed in delight. “You remember this kindergarten play? You were adorable!”

Regan put down a stuffed cat named Carlson to examine her younger self in a homemade firefighter costume with a sparkly silver crown on top of her fire helmet. She had her arms spread out wide to the crowd as she delivered her line.

“Mo-om,” she complained. “Put that thing away.”

It was one of those blackmail photos that all mothers have of their children. Regan had been assigned as the firefighter in a play about occupations. She’d wanted to be a princess, but their kindergarten teacher had insisted every child represented a ‘realistic’ job. Regan pretended to go along with it, but when she came out on stage, she’d stuck her favorite tiara on her head in defiance.

“What? You were a wonderful firefighter.”

“We both know that’s not why you love this photo.”

“But your one line was so well executed.” I took a deep breath to project my voice like she had at six years old. “‘I fight fires with my hose . . . and SPARKLE!’”

Regan stuck her face in Carlson’s whiskers to hide her shame. “I should have burned that picture in the fireplace long ago.”

“It wouldn’t have done you any good. I have the original film around somewhere, plus Jessie’s got extra copies stashed at her house too.”

Regan removed her face from the plush cat. “Speaking of the Dunlaps, do you think I could talk to Leah? I bet she’s awake now.”

“I thought Barbara had your phone.”

“She never asked for it back after we did that weather research. I certainly wasn’t going to offer.”

“What about promising Barbara you wouldn’t contact Leah anymore?”

Regan looked sheepish. “I mean, I said I would if I had to, but I hadn’t actually promised anything concrete so—”

“Just kidding, I don’t care one way or the other. But first, help me haul these things into that closet upstairs.”

Eager to talk to her bestie, Regan stacked two boxes on top of each other and raced up the stairs. I took a more leisurely pace with a few trash bags. It took us several trips up and down that steep flight of stairs, and my legs complained as we finally stored away the last of our belongings. Immediately afterward, Regan plopped down on her bed and pulled out her phone. I trudged back downstairs to give her privacy, wondering what to do. It wasn’t like they had TV or even a deck of cards to play solitaire with at the diocese house.
